Day 3 (Tuesday, May 16, 2023) - At Sea, Celebrity Beyond 12 night Mediterranean Cruise

Seth still had a bit of jet lag overnight but I slept pretty well and was up at 6 am. I headed to the fitness center which meant 8 flights of stairs to get up to deck 15 and then all the way to the forward of the ship. The Beyond is one of the longest (and largest) ships we’ve ever been on, over 1000 feet with a capacity of 3260 passengers, and 17 decks.  During our entire cruise, we were definitely the biggest ship in port.

Our suite, 7327, was fabulous – so spacious and I love the veranda which not only has 2 chairs and a table but also 2 loungers. The only thing about our suite is that it’s on deck 7 in the aft which is about as far as you can get from the Retreat Lounge – the special lounge, bar, pool, and sun deck just for suite guests – on decks 15-17 forward. That’s a lot of stairs to climb after going almost the full length of the ship to get to the forward part.

A word about the bathroom. Gotta initially watch that step going into the bathroom. After taking a minute to figure out how to use the shower (why is it so different and tricky on just about every cruise line??  There’s a small skinny lever behind the bottom square faucet handle that you flip to the right and then use the top square handle to determine where the water comes out and the bottom square handle to adjust the temperature of the water) I have to say that I love the rainfall type shower head. The bathtub/shower combo is very roomy but I did feel a little sheepish for not initially finding the shampoo, conditioner, and soap. When the shower door is open, these items are behind that door and hard to see. I thought they forgot to provide us with these amenities and I hadn’t brought any along. These bottles just sit on a tray and I didn’t notice that the bottle order had been changed the next time I showered. 😂

The bath towels are nice – larger and not rough (I wouldn’t say “soft” - not the most luxurious bath towels we’ve ever had on a cruise, but definitely not the roughest). That’s a pet peeve of mine – how some luxury accommodations skimp on the towels hoping nobody notices. I love the vanity – it’s actually functional – has plenty of space on the vanity for makeup and additional shelves – there were so many shelves, I didn’t have to use my go-to over-the-door hanging pockets or even the drawers.

After showering, we went to Luminae for breakfast which was solid. I was happy to see a pastry being offered with raisins – that’s my favorite thing for breakfast – anything with raisins. I also really liked the hash browns which were well prepared – crispy and not too oily. The over-easy eggs were good and I enjoyed some hot tea. The service was great, our water, Alvin, reminded me a lot of a friend of mine at home.

Another note about the bathrooms on the ship – most public restrooms are opened by passing your hand in front of a sensor. Some restroom doors open and you step right into the stall with the toilet. One tricky thing that took a little time to figure out and was really awkward is that if you try to reach over and lock the door too soon, the door automatically opens right up again. And then you’re just awkwardly standing there waiting for the door to close so you can lock it.  You have to step away from the door, wait until it fully shuts, then lock it.

I did a bit of work on the computer and was glad to see that my connection to our EHR worked as did my access to my business banking account and documents. I was able to sign charts, answer a few messages, and reconcile our deposits.

The streaming wifi via Starlink was quite good – a HUGE improvement from the days when you got zero internet connection (without a hefty price tag per minute) while at sea, and even when you paid for it, it was spotty and choppy. Something I tried to look up before leaving on our trip was exactly how the wifi worked for our suite. I was under the impression that we were only allowed one device but it turns out that we were each able to create our own login on the Starlink system. To use a device, you just log out (go to login.com on any browser) of your previous device and log in on another one. If you try to log in while still being logged in on another device, it prompts you to “switch” rather than pay for another device. Celebrity made it very easy to do this – when you try to log in with a different device using the same login and PIN code, it prompts you to switch the internet connection from another device to your current one.

We then met up with the group at the World Class bar and I started playing bingo. I had, just for fun, looked at all of the drink menus on the ship online and picked out the cocktails that I figured I would like and put them on a bingo card. My goal was to get a blackout. I started with an American Pie cocktail – really good.

We had decided to try Raw on 5 for lunch and it was so good we made another reservation for the following week. Everything we had was delicious including the Snowberry cocktail I had (which wasn’t actually on my bingo card), The Beyond Roll, Pork Belly skewers, Assorted Sashimi, and Shrimp and Scallop Kakiage were great. We tried some of Wade’s Tempura Bok Choy – also outstanding.

We hung out that afternoon on the Retreat Sun Deck. It was so nice to just relax and enjoy each others’ company.

For dinner that evening, we had reservations at Eden so we met at the Eden Bar. This was the first time we really had something to drink that we didn’t enjoy. I had ordered a Fig (bourbon, fig syrup, lemon juice, and orange bitters). It tasted like fruit punch. We mentioned it to our waiter and he actually brought us some bourbon in a cup and added it to our drinks which made them much better. Additionally, almost all of the drinks at the Eden Bar are more than $17. Our premium liquor package included all drinks up to $17. Anything above that, we would be charged the difference. This was one bar we decided not to visit again.

We originally intended on doing the tasting menu but the waiter talked us out of it. All of the items on the tasting menu were on the regular menu. We were already paying an upcharge just to eat at Eden, but the wine pairing was an extra charge and everyone would have to have both the tasting menu and the wine pairing. That’s the first time we’ve ever been to a tasting where there was no choice. It wasn’t hard to talk us out of the tasting menu. What our waiter ended up doing was pretty much bringing us one of everything on the menu for us to try. The food was really good but we were booked at Eden twice (one to try the tasting menu and the other to try the regular menu) and will likely cancel the 2nd night.

One other thing about dining in specialty restaurants. As Captain’s Club Elite Plus members (this was our 10th Celebrity cruise), we get 15% off the upcharge in each of the specialty restaurants. Additionally, since we’re suite guests, we have the premium beverage package which also gets us 20% off the price of bottles of wine.

We went to the 7:30 pm show, Uptown, which was a high-energy Motown trio of singers who were also good dancers. The production was very good – the songs were fun and the singers were very entertaining.

Day 2 (Monday, May 15, 2023) - Rome to Civitavecchia, Celebrity Beyond 12 night Mediterranean Cruise

We met up with our group at the hotel restaurant for breakfast which was pretty good although over easy eggs at this particular restaurant was a completely cooked fried egg. After breakfast, Seth and I went for a walk and found the crowds near the Trevi Fountain were much better than they had been the day before when we couldn’t even see the front of the fountain because of the huge crowd. We wandered around a bit looking for a bank with an ATM and the first one we found didn’t take any of our credit cards. We did find another ATM that charged a very reasonable 3 Euro transaction fee with what worked out to be a 1% conversion fee on my American Express business platinum card. We got enough euros that, along with the 500+ Euros we saved from our Italy/Switzerland trip last year, was enough to cover all of the tour tips for the 5 of us.

We met our Kensington representative in the hotel lobby just before 10:30 am and our car (much bigger than the Merkava car we had the day before) came around front for us to load up. It was about 1.5 hours to get to the cruise terminal even though it was just about 40 miles. We took a traffic detour into Vatican City briefly and got to see St Peter’s Square which was neat.

When we arrived at the terminal, our driver unloaded all of our suitcases and I tipped him 20 Euros. There was a porter there that helped Lisa and Tim with their suitcases and carry-ons along with the folding wheelchair. I tipped him 20 Euros as well but, in retrospect, should not have tipped him that much because he literally just took their suitcases in about 20 yards and handed them off to the same folks we left our luggage with. It took a little bit to get through security where, for the first time, they made me go back through the scanner and take my watch off and put it through the X-ray machine. We took the escalator up and found the VIP pre-departure lounge for suite guests right at the top of the escalator.

There was a Celebrity staff person who asked us for our stateroom and names and told us to have a seat. We got some water bottles, snacks, and coffee, and used the bathroom. At least 3 Celebrity staff members asked us if we had “checked in” and we told them each time that we had been but there was some general confusion because although we checked in when we arrived, all the staff member did was check our name off on her paper list. We thought that was “check-in” and just waited around until someone finally figured out that we hadn’t been checked in yet and that we needed to have our boarding pass scanned. Once that was done, we had our boarding pass scanned once more and then walked right onto the ship.

By this time, it was past 1 pm and the lunch they were serving for suite guests in Luminae was only open until 1:30 pm so we tried to make a beeline to the elevators and the restaurant but Lisa and Tim got high-jacked and sent off to the muster station by a well-meaning crew member who told them they had to go to their muster station “right now” which was wrong. Fortunately, the staff at Luminae was very understanding and waited on us as Lisa and Tim finally found us. We really enjoyed our first lunch on the ship – had a cocktail that was delicious (bourbon and peaches) and the lobster roll which was different – lobster with finely chopped carrot. We were off to a good start.

We went to our muster station and then found our cabin, deck 7, #7327 at the aft port side of the ship.  Something different about muster on this cruise - we got to watch videos on our Celebrity app and then all it took was for us to check in with our station and let the celebrity staff know we had viewed the videos.  So much easier than the days we had to pick up our life jackets, put them on, and then wait out on the deck with all the other passengers for everyone to get to muster just to watch them demonstrate how to put on a life jacket.

Our suite was super nice with a king-sized bed, a veranda with both chairs/table and 2 lounge chairs facing the back of the ship, and a really good-sized bathroom with shower/tub combo. The only downside to our cabin is that all of the Retreat amenities (lounge, bar, sun deck) are just about the furthest away we could be at the very front of the ship on levels 14-17. Seth and I made a decision that we would avoid the elevators but ended up just using the stairs going up and the elevator going down. By the end of our trip, I had logged about 430 flights of stairs. 🤪

We met our butler, Teo, from the Philippines who was awesome. She oriented us to our cabin and made sure we understood how to use the included streaming wifi, made sure we were provided with canapes each afternoon, and answered our questions. After unpacking, we met up with our group at the Retreat Lounge where we adjusted some of our dinner reservations. The Celebrity Concierge service had made some reservations for us but I had booked the chef’s table at Le Voyage which Celebrity didn’t even let us know which evening it would be. As it turns out, it conflicted with another reservation we already had but the concierge at the Retreat lounge easily took care of everything for us. Our schedule ended up being:

Monday, 5/15/23 (boarding) – Le Petit Chef, 6 pm
Tuesday, 5/16/23 (Sea Day) – Eden, 6 pm
Wednesday, 5/17/23 (Katakolon) – Fine Cut Steak House, 6 pm
Thursday, 5/18/23 (Crete)– Chef’s Table, Le Voyage, 6 pm
Friday, 5/19/23 (Santorini) – Blu (no reservation necessary)
Saturday, 5/20/23 (Mykonos) – Le Voyage, 6 pm
Sunday, 5/21/23 (Istanbul) – Nicole, 6 pm
Monday, 5/22/23 (Sea Day) – one of the main dining restaurants
Tuesday, 5/23/23 (Kusadasi) – Luminae (no reservation necessary)
Wednesday, 5/24/23 (Athens) – Rood Top Garden Grill, 6 pm
Thursday, 5/25/23 (Sea Day) – Blu
Friday, 5/26/23 (Naples) – Luminae
Saturday, 5/17/23 (Rome) – il Pagliaccio

We made our way to Le Petit Cafe and enjoyed the “show” on our table, the food, and the couple that sat next to us. It’s a fixed menu but there is some flexibility – the main menu follows the “show” but any of the courses can be changed to something from the alternate menu so I opted for the first 2 courses off the alternate menu (cured salmon and roasted beet salad and the last 2 courses off the main menu ( (beef short rib and strawberry chantilly napoleon)). The food was outstanding and the show was cute. There’s an additional fee to eat at Le Petit Chef and the menu stays the same so once is plenty.

We were exhausted after dinner and hung out in the retreat lounge briefly before going to bed.

Day 4 (Wednesday, May 17, 2023) - Katakolon, Greece, Celebrity Beyond 12 night Mediterranean Cruise

Another thing about our suite at the aft, sometimes it got really noisy. The night before there was a special show in Eden which is directly below us. We could hear the “booming” sounds coming from the 11 pm show. In addition, and I think this was just because we skipped Sicily, the ship was moving really fast to Santorini (originally, we were going from Sicily to Santorini with a sea day in between) and it sounded like something was getting ready to take off – the loud engine sound with a bunch of vibrating.

I had peeked at the tour offerings for Katakolon since this was our “bonus” port but there were, surprisingly, only 2 being offered, and they were both sold out. No biggie as we really weren’t very interested in taking a ship tour.  I had already called Kensington to let them know that we had to cancel our Sicily tour.

We decided to try Blu for breakfast this morning because it was downstairs from our cabin and a lot closer to the aft side of the ship. As we were checking in, a couple started waving at us and I realized immediately that it was our old friends, Joyce and Perter from Scotland. We had originally met them 15 years ago on a Celebrity cruise – the same cruise we met Wade and Charlie on. They are double zenith Celebrity Captains Club members – this was their 95th Celebrity cruise and they had actually changed their plans having just gotten off the Beyond a couple of weeks ago. They were scheduled for a different cruise but switched to our cruise just to surprise Wade. They were staying in an infinity veranda room and were moving for the 3rd time to a different deck. We agreed to meet with them in the Retreat Lounge after they packed and had their things moved. Wade was so surprised when they popped in. It was fun to catch up with them.

We later ended up at Cafe al Bacio for drinks and then went to the Mast Grill for lunch. I wanted to have a simple hot dog and french fries – both were good.  Cafe Al Bacio became one of our go-to places for a meet-up or drink.

After lunch, we wandered off the ship into Katakolon, walked around a bit, and did some shopping. I bought some garlic-flavored spray olive oil (2,50 Euros), a Katakolon magnet (1,50 Euros), a box of different kinds of baklava (8 Euros), and a cute silver Greek bangle (15 Euros). I saw some of the largest roses I’ve ever seen – as big around as my face.

We got back on the ship and spent the afternoon hanging out at the Sunset Bar. A few more cocktails ticked off my bingo card.

Dinner tonight was at Fine Cut Steakhouse. Our waiter pretty much did the same thing as the Eden waiter – brought us just about one of everything on the appetizer and side order menus. Seth and I shared a boneless rib eye. The food was fantastic. My original plan was just to have vegetables and a small sliver of Seth’s ribeye but that didn’t happen as our waiter kept bringing dish after dish and I felt obligated to try them all. They were so good.

We caught the “show” at the Martini Bar around 8:30 pm where the giant lights above the bar are synchronized to music and the bar staff perform juggling bottles and doing other cocktail tricks. Afterwards, we attended the Arte show which was really good. I enjoyed the music and the acrobatics were really quite good – the show reminded me a bit of a Cirque du Soleil show but set to updated versions of popular songs.
